Overview

FMEDA objects are most commonly mapped to design instances. For parts and subparts instance boundaries are always sufficient, but for FM mapping there are cases where module boundaries don’t exist or don’t provide the right level of precision:
-
When a leaf instance doesn’t provide enough resolution – as created by the designer.
-
When a leaf instance doesn’t provide enough resolution – when created by synthesis by flattening a design hierarchy.
-
When an instance is not a leaf, but more resolution is needed for its own (sparse) logic (less common).
In such cases the safety engineer is interested in performing an analysis on design instances to extract elementary functions from the design logic. These are extracted based on selecting points on the design when server as functionality end points or design constraint, and then performing a “cone of logic” analysis.
First Baby | Application
Logo, UX and UI design for First Baby, a new application for young parents and expecting parents. The app is a toolkit full of quick and up-to-date solutions for all parental needs: shopping, sales, a baby accessories rating system, and professional advice about topics such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, child development, nutrition and more.

Research
-
Survey: I created a survey comprised of a short questionnaire, and posted it in two major Facebook groups about pregnancy, birth and babies. I discovered that 80% of the surveyed participants use their smartphones to engage with groups and forums related to these topics. About 50% of them also use a computer, but smartphones are their primary tool for updates.
-
Interviews: I invited some of these participants to take part in personal interviews. During the interviews, I learned that their main interests are birth and parenthood, and that they are looking for a single site that includes all information and materials about baby care.
Challenges
Creating a mobile one-stop-shop for all information and materials about baby care.

User flow: looking for a stroller
-
Anat sits in her living room with her husband and tries to decide which stroller to buy
-
She opens the application
-
She enters the shopping section
-
She selects ‘Stroller’ in the quick search menu
-
She filters the results by highest rating
-
She clicks on the first option with the highest rating
-
She views the photos and likes the red color
-
She checks the product information section and finds that it meets her needs
-
She reads reviews from other users
-
She saves her selection in a designated list, so she’ll remember the model when she’s at the store
Wireframes
According to the research, most mothers search for information using their smartphones while they are feeding or breastfeeding. Based on these results, I chose to use large, noticeable and convenient buttons. In addition, I paid special attention to the easy and effortless transition between categories and sections - so that a user currently engaging with the shopping category, searching for a baby chair, would be able to switch to the mom forum in one click, post a link to the relevant chair, and get feedback from other moms or tell them about an attractive deal that she found.
